PLANS FOR THE FUTURE - 2

UPSTAIRS

UPSTAIRS, the main displays will remain largely unchanged but there are a number of important improvements and enhancements.

Having arrived upstairs, the visitor will be directed, as now, first to the Norreys Room for The Wallingford Story. Visually this will be unaltered but we are keen to upgrade the aged cassette machines to more modern solid-state devices - which will allow us to offer different language options and a separate version for children.

Leaving the Norreys Room, the Civil War exhibit in the small lobby will be improved with better lighting and displays and this important element of our story will be expanded to use the wall space in the corridor. On the other side of the corridor we will begin the important story of Transport & Communications, which will include river, road and rail transport, postal and telephone services, etc.

This will lead into a a brand new Transport Gallery where we will at last have room to display the whole of the splendid Wallingford Station model (subject to agreement from its owner). This area will also feature Wallingford Bridge and other River features from downstairs, such as the Thames Lock models.

In the Hutchinson Room, our very successful range of settings will continue to give us the flexibility of changing the artefacts on show, allowing us on occasions to follow the theme of a special exhibition throughout the different ‘rooms’.

A new exhibit about Flint House itself will be constructed next to the medieval timber framing.

The Office and Storeroom will be improved to provide better behind-the-scenes working areas.
