How Will It Work? Much
like the project in 2005 at the Northmoor Trust , this will be a joint,
hands-on event involving the Museum, people of the town and, we hope, the
Carpenters’ Fellowship - the not-for-profit trade body which
represents and sets standards for the structural timber framing industry
in the UK - who were also responsible for the build of the Abingdon
School Boathouse in 2003 (see below left) and the award-winning Northmoor Trust
building at Little Wittenham (see below right)
It is hoped that there will be opportunities for any one interested to experience the event and even partake in various parts of the build process. These might include the traditional conversion of the oak into beams by hewing with axes and pit saws, cutting and assembly of the frame, the cladding and finally the wattle and daubing. There will be expert instruction and supervision available for these techniques. A Festival of Traditional Skills The end product of the event is a
well-constructed building but its true value is in the local community’s
involvement in the process, and their ownership of the end result. There
are several stages: A scene like the one below (building the Abingdon School Boathouse) is what the public will be able to enjoy on the Kinecroft next year:
